Aguadeiras

I had the honor of being invited to participate in the Aguadeiras project by Cris Marcondes, where we performed together at the south fountain of Rossio Square in Lisbon on March 25th. This performance served as an initiation, a thread connecting us to our ancestry, and a tribute to the image of the water-bearing woman. I am deeply honored to have been part of and to support this work, which holds close connections to my Portuguese roots. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Cris Marcondes for the invitation; through it, we found ourselves in communion, fostering awareness of water consciousness and reconnecting with the river Tejo.

This performance is part of a larger project by Cris Marcondes, who explores experimentation in the body of ancestral records of cultural memory. As a Brazilian dancer/choreographer, she engages in a “conversation” with a female ancestral figure: the water-bearing woman.

“Water sources are revered as cultural territories of ancestry for many peoples. The water-bearing woman sanctifies the water and invokes the magic of ancient times through song and labor. Through the fusion of image, body, and territory, participants immerse themselves in gestures, ancestral voices, and waters. Emotions, memories, and expressions flow into movements, weaving images permeated by songs, drums, and prayers that evoke the liquid universes of the body, tracing winding paths of water, crossing portals and borders, akin to fountains, at the threshold of existence’s duality, where sweet salts and water in its myriad forms, from a stream to a mere drop, coexist.

The choreographic exploration is grounded in the movement of water and its interaction with the body, as well as the interplay between water and dance in this volatile and dynamic element. It examines how the body responds to water, both internally and externally, manifesting in circles and spirals, waves and shapes. Just as water permeates us and we it, forging an intimate relationship, our natures become intertwined.”
