Alchemy Film Festival ; OTHER VOICES Programme on Friday 4th of May @ HEART OF HAWICK, Scotland

Screenhot. Derbis by Giuseppe Boccassini

FRIDAY 4 MAY
11:50am – 1:30pm
MAIN AUDITORIUM – HEART OF HAWICK

Spoken word and image collide through a typewriter, film consciousness, and a story of failed execution in Olly Olly Oxen Free. In Creepers, a headless body inhales and exhales the language of animals, as if possessed by animism. Debris presents us with a fever dream of energised fragmentary film, a travelogue of a shipwreck. In Eidolon, the dream deepens into three overlapping magical nightmares, apparitions and ghosts. Linguistic divisions evaporate as a conversation with a drug-taking crow ensures in To get in touch with crows. In Onward Lossless Follows, the stars won’t help you but a horse with no name might, permeated with stranger-danger. Words, memory and meaning dissolve entirely in playful defiance of language itself within Dit Learn. A quiet and dreamlike harmony is restored through a visual poetry of being and shadows in Impassenger.

* Katharine Fry, Giuseppe Boccassini, Louise Milne, Rhona Mühlebach, and Ben Pointeker will be present for a Q&A.

Uloge: Mae Murray, John Gilbert.

Review on Häxän Project. Other cinema screening at ATA. San Francisco. October 2016

Häxän Project

Last night, Other Cinema hosted a gathering of witches, both embodied and bound in celluloid. The night began with a brewing of cups by the Church of Color and Light, a local ritualistic performance collective that uses overhead projection, dance movement, and incantation for audience involvement and transformation. One slithering spirit even abandoned a rubber snake in my lap. Soundtracked by the buzzing of flies, their cultus ceremony set tone for a spooky evening with intermittent camera flashes punctuating the dark.

Cohesively curated experimental film and video from past iterations of the Häxän Festival filled the remainder of the evening’s program. Häxän celebrates witchcraft and the personal occult from a feminine perspective, with all works curated and made by women. The program was strong yet scrappy, with a generous dose of silence and nudity. A couple of pieces veered too close to the works of experimental film great Maya Deren (unsurprisingly) and animator Lewis Klahr, to be truly original.  But the lovely, ghostly Trapped Between Frames by Nazare Soares seemed outright possessed with its multi-exposed film frames trembling and twitching

After 2 epic Autumns in the East Bay, the Haxan Project now sets up stakes in the Mission, to initiate a Big-City audience into its irresistible cycle of wicca-ed cinema, with a tent-full of works—all women-made—capped by a provocative live performance! Curators Courtney Fellion, Phaedra Restad, and Hannah Schulman have hand-picked the very best work from their wildly creative coven, including transformative pieces from Gina Basso, Karissa Hahn, Leslie Supnet, Sarah Rooney, Natalie Tsui, Nazar Soares, Laura Conway, Lili White, and Julia Triangular—all to be consummated in the rites of the Church of Color and Light, whose overhead projections and hypnotic incantations promise a path to thee metaphysical via our beloved smoke machine! Free mulled wine.
